PRESS RELEASE

Currency symbol for the euro

15 July 1997

The EMI recognises the need for a distinctive codified symbol for the single currency and supports the logo proposed by the European Commission as a symbol for the euro.

A logo to identify the euro blends with the current use of abbreviations in written language; it represents a distinctive sign for use in price lists and in other documents with monetary values (e.g. cheques, invoices, tickets, etc.), which may be of particular help during the transition phase.

The EMI encourages the inclusion of this symbol in the standard character sets which are widely used in the IT industry.
