The international role of the euro

Once a year the ECB publishes a report presenting an overview of developments in the use of the euro by non-euro area residents. To create conditions that support its global role, it is crucial to make progress on the savings and investment union, digital euro and cross-border payments, while continuing to uphold the rule of law.

Main findings of the 2025 report

The international role of the euro remained broadly stable in 2024. This stability was noteworthy in a year that saw the ECB begin lowering policy rates, following further declines in inflation and amid continuing geopolitical tensions.
